TGIF, Jan 23, 5:30pm
Our own Chancel Choir with seven of our soloists perform Haydn’s “Paukenmesse” Mass no. 10, which reflects both Haydn’s faith and the tumultuous times in which it was written. Doors to the sanctuary open at 5:15pm and the concert begins at 5:30pm. The concert is free with donations accepted.
Program
Mass, no. 10 “Paukenmesse,” or Missa in Tempore Belli (Time of War) was written in 1796, as Austria was losing to France under the young general Napoleon. The Austrian government declared that peace should not be discussed, only victory and the expulsion of the French. The first performance was on December 26, 1796, in the Piarist Church of Maria Treu in Vienna. The final movement “Agnus Dei” combines sinister passages for the trumpets and timpani that cloud the first introduction of the text “Dona nobis pacem” (Grant us peace.)
The mass has the traditional five sections: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus/ Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.
Soloists are Nancy Maret, Anne Bradley, Nina Brown, Cheryl McCulla, Michael Roybal, Travis Bregier and Time Willlson. David Solem will provide piano accompaniment.
The Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church is a group of volunteer singers that provides music for Sunday morning services throughout the year. In addition to singing hymns with the congregation during the services, the group performs an anthem for each Sunday service and, when appropriate, provides choral responses during the service. The Choir also performs regularly on the TGIF Concert Series, presenting masterworks by notable composers, often with soloists from the choir.
After enjoying this concert, you may want to become a part of the beautiful singing at First Presbyterian Church and sing a wonderful range of music from choral classics to folk music from around the world! Contact Linda at lraney@fpcsantafe.org for more information.
