Our Resilient Neighbors
Expand your understanding of our Pueblo neighbors by attending the Sunday Acts II Adult Education classes at October 10th through 31st.
- October 10—8 Centuries of History. The class covers the history of the Pueblo Nations up through the Spanish colonization the mid 1800s.
- October 17—Survival under US Governance. This class covers the period of Mexican rule and then the governance of the United States, focusing on issues then with some of the same issues continuing today.
- October 24—Restoration of Rights. This class focuses on modern movements to restore rights for indigineous people. We will look at the effect of the Doctrine of Discovery on the Pueblos and the call to repudiate that doctrine and the the damage done by Indian boarding schools with the ultimate goal of working toward repairing that damage.
- October 31—Presbyterian Call to Action. The final class looks at what Presbyterians have done to support indigeneous persons and explores actions we could still take.
A primary source of information for these discussions is the book Pueblo Nations; Eight Centuries of Pueblo Indian History by Joe S. Sando. Esther Milnes who organized this series and presented much of the material prepared a resource list for those interested in learning more.
Classes are held at 8:30 in McFarland Chapel and on Zoom.

Esther Milnes covers the Doctrine of Discovery and its impact on the Pueblo people. She further discusses the history of the boarding schools and shares an interview with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland about healing from Indian boarding house abuse. Download class slides.
