Luke 14:25-33
I interrupt this regularly scheduled blog on last Sunday’s sermon to invite you to our Celtic Evensong service which begins this Wednesday, September 14, 5:30 pm in the sanctuary, and will continue each week throughout the year. The idea came from our trip to Iona last June, from John Philip Newell himself, who told me that some churches across the country are offering such a service to meet the yearnings of the people.
Yearning for worship? Doesn’t seem like this is in sync with today’s society but as Philip pointed out, people are yearning for a connection with the sacred, and with each other, in a world where neither is too highly valued.
So let’s meet together midweek. Let’s sing some Iona and Celtic songs and pray beautiful prayers together in the sacred loveliness of our sanctuary and share a simple communion together. Let’s come together as a community and invite our neighbors and friends who may not have found their way to a Sunday morning worship. And let’s see what God has in store for us.
(And now you can look up last Sunday’s scripture and see what you can make of it. It is one of the more difficult passages to understand and leaves preachers a bit off balance. Come to think of it, maybe that is just what Jesus intended!)
