Adult Education / Acts II Fall Series 2021

An eleven-week series on major challenges facing our country today, and how Matthew 25 can help us address them.

  • September 12—Introduction to the Series—A look at the early church and the ways they met the challenges of their day, and how we might learn from them in meeting our own. Leaders:  Pastors Harry Eberts and Andrew Black.
  • September 19—The Border—What’s happening at the border and what we are doing about it. Leader:  The Rev. John Nelson, Pastor, University Presbyterian Church, El Paso, TX.
  • September 26—Climate Change—A discussion about what is happening right here in New Mexico that is adding to climate change, with a focus on Methane gas emissions. Leader:  Sister Joan Brown, Executive Director, New Mexico Interfaith Power and Light.
  • October 3—A Divided Country—Why are we, and how might we begin to heal? Leader:  David Solem, Jungian Therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).  David is also the Assistant Organist at our church.
  • October 10-31—The Pueblo Nations: Our Resilient Neighbors—For the class list and videos, see our Pueblo Nations page.
  • November 7—A Divided Country, Part 2: Transformation—Continuing the discussion, led by David Solem, of how we might heal.
  • November 14—Gun Violence in America: The Epidemic, the Issues, and Some Ideas to Move Us Forward. Presenters include Miranda Viscoli and Pastor Harry Eberts,
    Co-Founders and Co-Presidents of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence; and C.C. Wright, Church member, retired military, and shooting sportsman.
  • November 21—Church Vitality: What is the Pandemic Teaching Us?—Discussion led by Pastors Harry Eberts, Andrew Black, and Tony Arnold, law professor at the University of Louisville.

Other challenges to be presented are issues surrounding Pueblo Nations, gun violence, eradicating poverty, and church vitality.  Please join us each Sunday for these important discussions.  Stay tuned for more details!

November 7, 2021, A Divided Country, Part 2: Transformation
David Solem, Clinical Social Worker, in a continuation of our earlier discussion on the divisions within our county, focuses his discussion on personal transformation from a Jungian perspective, with frequent references to the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder. (See Our Town, by PBS Pictures, 2003, starring Paul Newman in the role of the Stage Manager.)

October 3, 2021, A Divided Country
David Solem, Clinical Social Worker, leads the class in a discussion of issues of trust and unaddressed trauma that underlie many of the divisions in the USA today.

 

 

September 26, 2021, Climate Change

Sister Joan Brown, Executive Director of NM Interfaith Power and Light, led the class in a discussion of climate change and actions people could take to help in the effort to create legislation more ecologically sound. September 19, 2021, Border Ministry

Rev. John Nelson, Co-Pastor of University Presbyterian Church of El Paso, spoke to the class about immigration on our southern border and how the Prebyterian Church is working to help the immigrants. Unfortunately, the class was not recorded. The recording shown here is the Minute for Mission presentation Rev. Nelson gave at the 11:00 worship service.

 

September 12, 2021, Class 1, World of the Early Church

Rev. Dr. Harry Eberts III explains the world of the early church, and Rev. Andrew Black leads a discussion of the Presbyterian Church today and a new emphasis on the Holy Spirit and being open to a new way of being in the church.
