The Back Pew Gallery features works of art created by members and friends of the church, as well as by the larger Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico community. Items displayed are usually offered for sale by the exhibiting artist.
The Back Pew Gallery is presenting a new exhibition for the last week of May and the month of June. The theme will be Santa Fe Landmarks and Icons. The gallery is accepting all personal art, including drawings, paintings, photographs, textiles, sculptures, and pottery, with this theme. A juror will choose works most consistent with the theme from the pieces entered. Only the pieces chosen will be exhibited. The juror is Elizabeth Hooks, the Director of the Gerald Peters Gallery of Santa Fe and a new member of the church.
The deadline for submissions is Sunday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to noon. No work will be accepted after that date. Each artist may submit two pieces. The works will be chosen during the week of May 21 and the exhibit hung Thursday, May 25. The opening of the exhibition will be on Friday, May 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. If you have questions about the exhibition, please contact the Back Pew Gallery.
Over the years, the gallery has mounted more than 24 exhibits, including a show of works created by homeless artists, works done by children, exhibits by artists in assisted living facilities, and a show of art from our sister church in Cuba. Themes of some of the past exhibits include: Landscapes: Real and Imagined; Spirit of the Season; Junktique; Artful Birds; Timeless Treasures; Art 1-5-0.
The gallery is located just through the lobby of the church and is open to the public on Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. after the TGIF concert, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m. The gallery strives to introduce quality art to all and perhaps encourage visitors to learn about our church and participate in our worship services.
The Back Pew Gallery is self-supporting through voluntary contributions of 10% of sales by exhibiting artists as well as by donations from patrons, thus enabling the gallery to donate to a variety of causes, including outreach and mission programs of First Presbyterian and Westminster Presbyterian Churches, the FPC Child Development Center, the Interfaith Community Shelter, arts programs offered through local assisted living facilities, our sister church in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, and other children and family assistance programs in Santa Fe.
Please visit the gallery and view its artistic creations. For more information about the gallery, including scheduling viewings outside of normal exhibit hours, contact the Back Pew Gallery.
