On Friday, September 19th, a dedicated team led by Frank and Billie Chambers—including Mary Ann Amos, Marie Gonzales, and Judi Haines—delivered a generous donation of fabrics, notions, and sewing machines to the Tooh Haltsoi Community Center in Sheep Springs Station, located on the Navajo Nation.
The group was warmly welcomed by Roberta Roberts, director of the center, along with her interns and staff. They provided a tour of the Navajo Quilt Project facility, shared a homemade lunch, and helped unload the supplies. Susan Hudson, founder of the Navajo Quilt Project, was also present, offering insight into the initiative’s mission and impact.
The event highlighted the power of community collaboration and cultural preservation through quilting. A PBS documentary about Susan and her work is available for viewing on NMPBS.
We received this thank you from Roberta.
Hi Mary Ann,
I do apologize for the late reply. We have been so busy with the metalsmithing workshop last week. Thank you so much for the donation that you and your team delivered to us, we are so grateful. The donation will help create awesome opportunities for our community members! Our youth workers were so excited about the donations. We began sorting the donation yesterday afternoon, putting fabric into bins and marking them and putting the supplies away all in partnership with Earnest from the sewing trailer. Brandon and Francine have begun to research the long arm to assemble so Susan can come back to give us training.
My student interns that assisted with unloading were Moraes Begay and Kyle Begay. My team members are Brandon Roberts, Francine James and Lakander Curley. Earnest Smith leads the sewing trailer and is a close partner to us in all our sewing workshops. I am working on scheduling more sewing workshops in October and November and can share updates with you.
We would be so humbled for any donations to our center, our administrative office can accept the donation at Yee Haolnii Doo PO Box 3581 Flagstaff, AZ 86003 Memo: Tooh Haltsooi Community Center or visit our website www.navajohopisolidarity.org.
Ahe’hee’ (Thank you) again for your generous donation and may you all be blessed for your hard work. Please extend our appreciation to your congregation how grateful we are.
Respectfully,
Roberta
