PBM Breakfast, Mar 9, 9-11am (New Time)
This Saturday Mohammad Ghweir will speak on “The Origins of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: A Palestinian Perspective.” Advance reservations are required for guaranteed seating. Questions must be submitted on cards and will be reviewed by the monitor for our speaker. Join us in Pope Hall or via Zoom to hear his personal perspective.
The Program
Our Guest Speaker Mohammad Ghweir came to the US in the early 70’s but still has many relatives living in Middle East that report to him what is going on there. He has worked for the state of NM for about 20 years as an engineer and prior to that five years for UNM as a geo-thin-section lab director. He was born in Bethlehem. His training was first with a bachelor degree in geophysics and then a Masters degree in geological engineering from NM Tech. He has been an avid follower of events in Palestine-Israel spending several hours a day keeping up to date.
Mohammad will start with The British Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917, which upended the lives of Palestinians. The first part of the program will end at 10:00 and the second at 11:00. He will also be presenting prepared material by others that express his views about which he will be prepared to answer questions. This is his story as he sees it, and you may not agree with all that he or his proxies say. We will maintain a respectful atmosphere and prepare discerning questions after listening to some detailed videos about the history of the conflict and views of Rabbis that support the Palestinian cause.
Attendee Registration Agreement
Attendees will be asked to agree to the following registration agreement:
I will not speak vocally about the content of the material presented by the guest speaker nor about the rules of this meeting and their implementation to the meeting. Quiet conversations at my table may be permitted but if I detect antagonism, I will direct those responsible to desist.
I may not agree with all that the guest speaker or his proxies say, but I will maintain a respectful atmosphere and to the best of my ability prepare (a) discerning question(s) after listening to some detailed videos. I will endeavor to enhance our understanding in a respectful manner by the questions I pose to a particular video segment and not obfuscate. These unsigned questions will be chosen by the monitor. I agree that the questions chosen to be posed to the speaker will be available to possibly be made public through posting such as a church website. I understand my name will not be ascribed to any such questions.
I agree that the meeting may be recorded by the Zoom process and later posted to the internet. The Zoom camera will be directed away from the audience towards the speaker podium and the video display.
My communication with the group-as-a whole on the topic of discussion or procedural matters, will be solely by submitted questions on cards and they will be reviewed by the monitor. I may pass my cards to members of my table to get their comments. I will give them to the monitor when requested so they can be collated and edited for duplicity or disrespectfulness and relevance.
Breakfast
At the event we will call for those who have pre-registered to line up first for breakfast as Group 1, then Group 2 (standby until full at 60 participants) will include all those who attend without preregistration. The breakfast will be guaranteed only to those who have pre-registered and those who come in Group 2 are not guaranteed a full meal. The number of pre-registered guests, was 31 as of 9 AM Friday.
The breakfast includes a gluten-free option planned by John Whitcomb, chief cook emeritus and quartermaster. John has been an integral part of Men’s Breakfast for over 40 years. He says “We’re planning to offer French toast with syrup, sausage (turkey also), juice, and mixed fruit next Saturday. And the ubiquitous oatmeal, of course.”
