PBM Breakfast, Oct 10, 8:30am
Our Guest speaker, Cindy Weehler, to be introduced by Rev. Sansom Williams, is a former high school chemistry teacher and is the spokesperson for the Fire On The Mountain Initiative. Its concern is the reckless way that nuclear waste is stored by the Department of Energy (DOE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Waste from the 1950s sits at Area G in canvas tents on a mesa in a forest known for catastrophic wildfires. Leaving the waste as it is jeopardizes New Mexicans health, property, and economy.
The FOTM solution to this public safety threat is simple: move the waste to the nuclear weapons’ waste dump at WIPP, near Carlsbad. The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the current governor have done an excellent job of changing the permit to require the DOE move this waste before the next wildfire. But, DOE is delaying this action and hoping the next governor will not continue to hold DOE accountable. Maintaining a consistent policy from one administration to the next is imperative.
We hope you will join us in Pope Hall for breakfast and to hear about this critically important topic. A suggested donation of $2 or more is appreciated to help cover the cost of food and beverages.
Breakfast will be prepared by our own Mark Bixby, serving up his professional, mouth-watering offerings. If you’d like some of Mark’s especially vigorous sourdough starter (it’s at its best this time of year!). To receive monthly Evite reminders and RSVP links, please text Jim Elliot at 505-557-8110 or email him with your email address (if you’re not already on the list). If you’d like to help out as a back-up or assistant chef, bottle washer, or buss person for Prepared by Men’s Breakfast—or if you have a program suggestion—please text Jim as well. You can also reach out to Wally Bettes through email or 214-893-7211 with ideas or offers to participate. For email addresses for these people, see our church directory or contact the church office.
We are looking forward to seeing you.
