Helping Our Immigrant Community
Recently (Feb 2), the Mission and Social Justice Committee gave a quick update on our immigration partner organizations. We’ve heard directly from these groups that the immigrant community in Santa Fe is nervous and afraid. There are ways you can help. Take a look at some options. Your help is needed.
Support Immigrant-Owned Businesses
We recommend that our congregation help by supporting immigrant-owned businesses, and businesses that cater to the immigrant population, particularly in the Southside. Consider shopping at the markets, restaurants, and food trucks on the Southside, along Cerrillos, Airport Road and other locations.
Stay Informed, Inform Others
In addition, stay informed with accurate information and share resources with others who could use your alliance and partnership, like friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.
Below are some resources to share:
- Share Know Your Rights cards (red cards) broadly. (We will have these at the desk in our lobby this Sunday)
- Direct people to true resources for information such as the National Immigration Project or Immigrant Legal Resource Center
- Follow Somos Accion on social media to support protests and legislative work for immigrants in New Mexico
- Follow the sister organization, Somos Un Pueblo Unidos, to learn how this group is protecting immigrants
- Attend trainings and seminars online
- Share the deportation defense toolkit from New Mexico Immigrant Law Center
Reach Out
You don’t need to have special skills, like language or legal training to help. Many of us volunteer with organizations that directly support immigrants in New Mexico and beyond. Please reach out to the Mission and Social Justice Committee if you want to do more. You can contact Gian Schauer or Bruce Goslin to learn more.
Thank you!
