Music from Handel’s Messiah (1741)

Part I

  1. Sinfonia (Overture)
  2. And He shall purify

And he shall purify the sons of Levi, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. (Malachi 3:3)

  1. O thou that tellest good tidings

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, glad tidings of Jerusalem, arise: say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!  Behold, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. (Isaiah 40:9; 60:1)

  1. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth

For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. (Isaiah 60:2-3)

  1. The people that walked in darkness

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. (Isaiah 9:2)

  1. For unto us a child is born

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

  1. Pifa (“Pastoral Symphony”) [The name of this movement comes from the Italian word for shepherd’s pipes – pifferi.)
  2. He shall feed His flock

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. ( Isaiah 40:11)

Come unto Him, all ye that labour, come unto Him that are heavy laden, and He will give you rest. Take his yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew11:28-29)

  1. His yoke is easy

His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. (Matthew 11:30)

  1. Let all the angels of God

Let all the angels of God worship Him. (Hebrews 1:6)

This transcription for an ‘organ only’ performance of Handel’s oratorio was adapted using the Novello Handel Edition of Messiah, edited and arranged for performance with organ by Watkins Shaw, and with an arrangement for piano for two hands by Louis Kohler.

Jan Worden-Lackey has been a professional church musician for more than 50 years. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Harpsichord and Piano Performance from Southern Methodist University and was the first Harpsichord graduate student of Dr. Larry Palmer.  Her organ study was with Dr. Susan Ferré and Dr. Larry Palmer, and she holds the Choir Master Certificate from the American Guild of Organists.  Jan has played numerous harpsichord, organ and early music concerts in Dallas, Santa Fe and Albuquerque.  She has performed with the Santa Fe Symphony, Canticum Novum and the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. She is the former choir accompanist for First Presbyterian Church, Santa Fe.
