Pride Is About Struggle for Liberation and Equal Dignity

Adult Ed, June 14, 9:45am

This Sunday Tony Arnold presents the third class in a three part series to help us understand Pride and our LGBTQIA+ siblings. This is about how Pride—from its origins as a riot at the Stonewall Inn to its present day struggle for the rights and humanity of trans people in society—has been a social justice movement, not just a celebration.

Even when the Church has inclusively welcomed LGBTQIA+ people to the life of the congregation, the Church has often failed to join LGBTQIA+ people as an ally, including the societal and policy arenas in which queer people are attacked and oppressed. FPCSF is learning that our mission of social justice includes joining LGBTQIA+ people in their community spaces, such as Pride, and advocating for their human rights.

This 3-part series is called “Love Must Win!: The Church and LGBTQIA+ Pride.” In the first class we learned why both God’s love and self-love need to be at the core of Pride both as a celebration and a movement. In the second class we looked at the real (and often unmet) need for a truly inclusive community and how our church can be more welcoming, inclusive, and empowering.

Adult ed classes in this series will be held in the McFarland Chapel and via Zoom. Because of the nature of this adult ed series, the sessions will not be recorded, so be sure to be there in person or via Zoom. We all need to learn how to better express God’s love and our love for LGBTQIA+ folks.
