The Journey Toward Antiracism

Adult Ed, May 12 & 19, Postponed

Watch for rescheduling of this class. Over the last few years, we have looked at the pervasiveness of racism in our society. Now it is time to take a hard look at our church and ourselves so we can move further in our goal of helping to dismantle racism. We will reschedule these classes as soon as possible.

Join us in person in the McFarland Chapel or on Zoom. (Please note that this class will not be recorded for later viewing.)

In these classes, we will look at the Continuum on Becoming an Anti-Racist Multicultural Organization given to us by Dr. Amantha Barbee in her intersectionality workshop last spring. We will attempt to identify where we are and where we need to go. We will also review the Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture that we learned from Dr. Simesha McEachern back in the fall and try to spot where these characteristics are showing up in our culture. (See videos of classes.) We will have a summary of these characteristics as a handout at the class. You can read a longer, more detailed version in advance if you wish: White Supremacy Culture—Still Here by Tema Okun, May 2021.

Dr. Barbee advised us that we need to become more culturally competent, and to do this we first need to better understand our own culture—our culture here in Santa Fe and our culture here at our church. These classes are another step in our long journey to do just that.
