To adequately understand the oppression of people who are marginalized, we must understand the impact of the intersection of race, gender, sexuality, ability, class and other characteristics. Join us in an upcoming workshop led by Rev. Dr. Amantha Barbee.
The class will explore what intersectionality is, how understanding it helps us understand each other, what this has to do with the church, and how we can use the information that we gain.
The class will be a combination of four Zoom classes and then an in-person workshop: Zoom classes will be Sunday afternoons, 3:00-4:30: March 19, March 26, April 16, and April 23. The Zoom classes culminate with a full day in-person class on Saturday, May 6, at FPC. Attendees are asked to come for all or at least most of the classes since each class builds on the prior one.
Then on Sunday May 7, Rev. Barbee will preach at our 10:00am service and join us afterward for our potluck lunch.
All are welcome to join us, so feel free to invite others. There is no charge for this workshop.
Rev. Barbee helped us with our February classes Racial Justice: Bending the Arc, and for our last class she prepared a short video (see below) to tell us about the upcoming Intersectionality workshop.
To quote a member of our class who has taken classes from Rev. Barbee before, “If you think you are woke and you are a person who never discriminates and knows how to approach this difficult topic, I guarantee that you will learn more.”
To sign up for this class, contact Gale Wright at galewright318@gmail.com or 703-795-1520. If possible, let us know by March 12th that you will be attending.
Rev. Barbee is currently the senior pastor at Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is trained in racial justice and has won awards for her pursuit of justice. Read more about her on the Quail Hollow staff page.
